Car Accident Prevention Technologies

From the way we communicate to how we access information, technology has had an impact on virtually every aspect of modern life. Car Accident Prevention Technologies have also had a major impact on the way we get around; specifically, on how we travel via car.

Thanks to technology, 21st-century cars are smarter and safer than ever before; given the unprecedented number of drivers on the road and the influx of usage of other forms of technology while driving (such as cellphones), that’s certainly a good thing. While there aren’t flying cars (yet), today’s vehicles can perform a wide range of functions, and these functions are intended to increase driver safety.

5 Types of Car Accident Prevention Technologies

If you’re on the market for a new vehicle, it stands to reason that safety is a top priority. Here’s a look at the top five Car Accident Prevention Technologies you might want to consider.

  • Lane Departure Warning

Lane Departure Warning (LDW) lets you know when your vehicle is drifting out of the lane you’re driving in; it also tries to steer your car back into the lane it’s supposed to be in. Beeping sounds, flashing lights, and vibrations in your steering wheel are all features that this technology uses to let you know that you’re drifting out of your lane.

  • Electronic Stability Control

Electronic stability control (ESC) either applies the brakes or reduces the amount of power to the engine to prevent over-steering in an effort to stop vehicles from losing control. This technology is particularly useful on slick surfaces; for example, if you’re losing control of your vehicle while you’re driving in the snow, ESC takes over. It’s estimated that ESC reduces the likelihood of roll-over and run-off-the-road accidents by 50%.

  • Blind Spot Warning

Blind spots can be extremely dangerous and are responsible for countless collisions each year; however, thanks to bling spot warning (BSW), you can avoid bling spot-related collisions. With this technology, radars are used to detect the presence of vehicles in your blind spot; when vehicles are detected, you receive a visual or audio alert – or both – to let you know that switching lanes or merging aren’t safe.

  • Automatic Emergency Braking

With automatic emergency braking (AEB), radars are used to determine the distance between your car and the car in front of you. If the radars detect that there’s a vehicle in front of you and you haven’t pressed the brakes with enough time to prevent a collision, AEB will automatically apply the brakes for you.

  • Cross-Traffic Alert

When you’re driving across an intersection or backing out of a parking space, this technology will let you know if another car is coming toward you from the side. The manner in which this technology sends alerts and reacts to dangers varies from system to system; for example, some systems can only detect vehicles that are behind the car, while others can detect vehicles that are both behind and next to the car. Additionally, some systems only send out notifications, while other systems will automatically brake the car.

Thanks to these Car Accident Prevention Technologies, you can have confidence knowing that you – and other drivers – will be a lot safer on the road.
