How Does Paintless Dent Repair Really Work by Great Plains Auto Body

When you see a car covered with dents, possibly damaged by a hail storm, do you ever wonder how paintless dent repair works to restore those vehicles to like new conditions? Most of us never imagine we’ll have to rely on paintless dent repair until the day Mother Nature calls us out, dropping hail stones all over our homes and cars in the size of quarters. Of course, shopping center parking lots are a favorite location to pick up a few dings and dents. From other vehicle’s doors or shopping carts running wild, cars and dents seem to develop a mutual attraction to each other there.

Where did that dent come from? Does this sound familiar?

Think back to the perfect night out where you or your friends have treated yourselves to a night at the movies, or possibly simply shopping at the mall or taking in a local sporting contest. You return to your car to see an ugly sized dent in it. You take a quick look around, but no one is waving their hand saying, “I did it.” After muttering a few choice words under your breath, you notice the paint wasn’t damaged. You breathe a sigh of relief because you know that taking your vehicle in to have that dent repaired and repainted would have cost you next month’s rent.
You still need to get your vehicle repaired, so you call your insurance agent , or possibly a friend or family member to ask for some advice. They tell you not to try repairing it yourself, rather take your car to a PDR technician (like you know what that is). So you ask, “What’s a PDR technician?” They’re amazed that you don’t know what paintless dent repair is or how it works.

Tip: Did you know that Great Plains Auto Body has insurance agents on-site for collision and auto body repair estimates including paintless dent repair. Next time you need an estimate give one of our locations a call. We would be glad to help you out!

The Paintless Dent Repair Method

There are a couple of different ways that PDR technicians in body shops and dent repair facilities can decide to remove a dent from your car, the most common of which is where the tech uses special tools to get behind the metal. They gently push the dent back to the surface, effectively making it appear the dent has vanished. Of course, not every dent can be accessed from the underside, so they’ll then defer to a method where they pull the dent out from the outside. One of the perils of this method is that the metal can bulge into a high area resembling a volcano or small hill. This is corrected by using another tool to tap it so it lies flat. Sounds complicated? It is, but it isn’t. A qualified PDR Technician, like Great Plains Auto Body Team, knows what they are doing!

The Paintless Dent Repair Solution

Aside from learning how Paintless Dent Repair works, there are additional benefits to going paintless. It often takes half the time as traditional methods do, and the resale value of your vehicle is higher. If you have a dent that needs to be repaired or even hundreds of dents from yesterday’s hailstorm, well trained PDR technicians will be able to remove those dents quickly.
