Keep Car Cool While Parked

Keep Car Cool While ParkedA big benefit to warmer weather is you don’t not have to wait for your car to warm up inside before you’re able to be comfortable while driving.

The flip side of this, of course, is that sometimes the temperature gets uncomfortably hot inside the car. This usually means you need to cool down the car before you can get comfortable.

Air conditioning is often your first and best option. It lets you control how hot or cold you and your passengers feel. The technicians at Great Plains Auto can make sure your driving environment is exactly what you want, whatever the season.

But air conditioning is only good when you’re in your vehicle with the engine running. Here are some “passive” precautions you can take to assure summer doesn’t result in an uncomfortably hot car interior.

Tint the windows

Tinting your windows has myriad benefits. It makes your vehicle look sleeker and makes it tougher for people to see what’s inside.

But the biggest benefit in warmer months is that tinted windows keep your car’s interior much cooler than non-tinted windows can, whether you’re driving or parked.

The darker the tint, the better it protects you from the heat. But Nebraska and many other states have laws regarding just how dark your vehicle’s window tint can be. Read about Nebraska’s laws here.

Crack the windows

If you leave your windows rolled up, you’re guaranteed to rapidly heat up your parked car. Leave the windows cracked as much as possible, but not wide enough so someone can reach in and grab stuff or unlock and open the door.

While cracking the windows may help keep your car from getting uncomfortably hot, it’s not cool enough to justify leaving pets or children in your vehicle alone. That scenario is dangerous for your pets and kids.

4 tips to wisely park

  • Park in a shaded spot when it’s possible, but know that parking beneath tree branches can result in bird droppings on your car.
  • Use a windshield shade to help keep your parked car shaded.
  • Park facing away from the sun. If you’ll be away from your car a long time, consider draping light-colored sheets or towels over darker-colored seats.
  • Keep your air conditioning in good working order to ensure a quick cooldown no matter how hot it becomes outside and inside.
