Rain Rain Go Away and Come Again Some Other Day
You may or may not realize that posted speed limits are actually set with daylight, dry driving conditions in mind. This means that when bad weather sets in, it’s important to readjust your speed to lessen the potential for an accident.
Driving in snow and ice can be tricky sometimes. Even when you know that road conditions will be poor and take all the necessary precautions, you may still find yourself skidding along or unable to stop at a stop sign.
But how about driving in the rain? Trying to drive in the rain can be a scary and challenging experience, but with a few basic tips, you can lessen the likelihood that you will have an accident.
- Check to see that your tires are inflated properly. Having tires that are under or over inflated may make it more difficult for drivers to stop in wet weather.
- Slow down. According to the Nebraska Department of Roads, “Driving too fast for conditions is one of the most prevalent factors contributing to traffic crashes. In Nebraska, more than one out of ten fatal crashes are speed-related.”
- Watch out for flooded roads. Weather.com advocates turning around if you see a flooded-out road and never drive through a flooded waterway even if it appears shallow. Water can easily cover the entire road and a lot of ground underneath so it may be difficult to tell just how deep the water is just by looking at it. One foot of water is enough to float almost any vehicle.
- Stay focused. Do not text or engage in any other distracting activities while you are driving. Rain causes poor visibility and you may not see another car or pedestrian until it’s too late.
- Be visible. Turn on your lights in order to see as much as possible. Having your lights on also allows you to be visible to other vehicles on the roadway.
And be sure to use those windshield wipers!
