Tire Shopping Trip

Posted on

You’re a cautious driver, you pay your insurance premiums and maintain your vehicle like a champ. You found a mechanic you can trust and shrewdly budget for any repairs. And yet, even you have nightmares about buying tires.

Replacing tires is one of the most dreaded “necessary evils” of car ownership. At some point, it will likely be required so you can drive safely. It will likely take a chunk out of your wallet. And it will likely cause you at least a little frustration.

Insider’s information

An Edmunds.com article reveals the tricks of tire salesmen. If you want to drive safely but not go broke, keep a few things in mind:

  • Know your car – You know your driving habits. For example, if you drive a sedan on city streets, a quality all-season tire will likely be all you need. Refer to your car’s owner’s manual, as the manufacturer will make a recommendation on tire size, and buying the right ones will increase fuel economy.
  • You CAN buy just one tire – If you just need one or two tires, only replace those. You don’t need to buy a “whole set” to replace one tire. Also, make sure the tires are the ones you wanted. Some garages may not carry the specific tire you want, and then try to sell you a more expensive one.
  • Get the “out the door” number – Preferably, the shop or garage where you’re buying the tires will include mounting, balancing and valve stems. Be sure to ask, though, and carefully review your bill before paying. Make sure you’re only paying for what you agreed to buy.
  • Don’t jump on extras – Keep records of your maintenance trips. Don’t assume you need a brake job or oil change just because a tire salesman tells you so.

When you do need to buy a whole set, every cost will be times four. That’s even more reason to do your tire research before making the shopping trip. Even though it may not be the most fun you can have, buying new tires is an important part of safe driving.
