Staying Clean in Winter
The snowy months can be the hardest time of year to keep your car clean, but also the most important time to do so. Road salt and ugly sludge can build up the more you drive. But air temperatures don’t always agree with washing, which puts the car owner in a bit of a dilemma.
It’s not just the wash
While the car wash is a critical tool in keeping your car clean in winter, you will need a few other tricks to make it work.
- Prep before it gets cold. Resource website askmen touts a good wash and wax before the first snow falls. This will help protect your car’s paint job from the harshness of winter, and make it easier to clean.
- Protect the interior. Angie’s List suggests replacing your carpet floor mats with heavy-duty rubber mats. These will hold the snow and dirt until they can be rinsed off, thereby saving your interior. Angie’s List also suggests washing your car when the temperatures are over 40; however, despite the air temp, make sure you wash during the day to allow plenty of time for your car to dry before nighttime temps plummet.
- Keep de-icer handy. Windows and door locks can ice over, which can sometimes make driving impossible. A can of lock de-icer can be a godsend. You also can buy a special anti-freeze for windshield washer fluid so it will continue pumping.
Winter is a messy time of year. Don’t let the salt and dirt consume your car.
