Squeaky Clean Windshield
There are many parts of your car that are often overlooked yet integral to safety and maintenance. Your headlights, for example, are a vital piece of equipment but you probably don’t think about them too much – at least not until one goes out and you get a friendly reminder from a police officer.
Another component you may not pay much attention is your windshield wiper blades. These are crucial, however, because they keep your windshield clean and therefore, the road visible.
Maintain and replace
Wiper blades are thin pieces of rubber in a frame. Like most rubber pieces, they eventually will wear down and not work properly. This can lead to difficulty driving, and not just in the rain. Your wiper blades clear away debris and clean the glass.
- Visual inspection: Wiper blade manufacturer Rain X suggests looking for broken or corroded metal frames and joints, or cracks in the rubber blade. When the blades start skipping across your windshield when you run them, or streaking, splitting or squeaking, you know the rubber blade is shot.
- Clean: Every time you get gas, take a paper towel and wipe the dirt and debris off the rubber blade. Be careful not to tear the blade or pull it out of the frame. This will help the wiper leave a clean surface behind.
- Replace: Most auto experts say to replace your wiper blades every six months. A set of wiper blades usually costs less than $40 for a good quality pair, so this is an inexpensive investment. Make sure you buy according to the year, make and model of your car to get the right size.
About 90% of driving decisions are based on visual information. Keep the flow of info free and clear by maintaining your wipers.
