Milking MPG
Gas prices are low now, and most people are enjoying a few extra bucks in their pockets each month. Depending on political or economic events, prices could rise again, and it’s a safe assumption that prices will rise at least a little during the summer driving season.
Keeping in mind a possible price hike, drivers may want to think about getting the most miles per gallon out of their cars. Practicing efficiency now will defray the sticker shock of a potential future price increase.
Drive right to save gas
Most people immediately think the kind of car they drive will determine whether they can get good gas mileage. That’s a big factor, but the way you drive whatever car you have a big impact. The U.S. Department of Energy gives some tips on making the most of your gas tank.
- Lighten your lead foot – Speeding up and slamming on your brakes can waste gas. The U.S. Department of Energy claims it can lower your gas mileage by 33%. Be a sensible driver.
- Drive the speed limit – Doing 50 through that 35 will waste gas. Different vehicles have different optimal speeds, but the U.S. Department of Energy claims that gas efficiency decreases above 50 mph.
- Take the luggage off the roof – Think aerodynamics. While hauling a trailer behind your car also reduces fuel efficiency, it does so by much less than mounting cargo on top.
The U.S. Department of Energy offers other tips, such as reducing weight, avoiding idling and using cruise control. Keep these pointers in mind, and practice them now while prices are low. You will be prepared to weather the next gas price hike.
