Adding a Teen Driver to Your Policy

Posted on

Many parents have mixed emotions when it comes time to add their teenagers to the family auto insurance policy. On the one hand, it’s great that teen drivers can take charge of getting from place to place without having to be shuttled around by mom or dad, but on the other hand, insuring teen drivers can be expensive!

Luckily, there are some things parents (and teens) can do in order to keep the insurance coverage as low-cost as possible.

Be proactive

Your teen can:

  • Get good grades – Some insurance companies offer good student discounts.
  • Take a driver’s education class – Many companies offer additional discounts for successful completion of a driver’s ed class.
  • Drive a modest car – Even though it may be a blow to the ego, the fancier the ride, the higher the insurance premium.

Parents can:

  • Take a family policy – It may be more expensive to insure a teen driver individually, and this way, all vehicles within the family are covered.
  • Select a higher deductible – Premiums may be lower, but keep in mind that in case of an accident, you will have to come up with more out-of-pocket for repairs.
  • Choose a safe car – Safety features and theft deterrents can reduce the cost of insuring your teen’s vehicle.

Most importantly, talk to your teens about driving. Make sure they know the importance of safe, undistracted driving. Set ground rules and let them know that driving is a privilege that may go away if they don’t take driving seriously.
